Sunscreen: Do I really need it?

Hi guys! Today I’m writing a post about sunscreen, which is a really important part of our beauty routine, or is it? The answer to the question of the title of this post is: YES!

But, why do I need it?
UV light can severely damage the skin and cause premature aging, visible wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, uneven pigmentation, etc.

The most important: UV radiation increases the risk for benign, premalignant and malignant neoplasms on the face, neck, hands and other areas of the body chronically exposed to the sun.

So, sun protection and sunscreens are key to skin cancer prevention (I have a similar post here)

And, what is a sunscreen?
They are creams to protect the skin, they should be water, resistant, hypoallergenic, photostable and should not penetrate the skin (the food and drug administration regulates this in the USA)
Probably you have seen in your sunscreen that it has the words “broad spectrum” this means it will protect you from UVB and UVA.

Sunscreens labels can be confusing, what is SPF? Sunburn protection factor, always accompanied by some number, SPF15, 30, 40, 50. Is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to produce sunburn on protected skin (i.e., in the presence of sunscreen) relative to the amount of solar energy required to produce sunburn on unprotected skin. As the SPF value increases, sunburn protection increases.

The FDA doesn’t support that any sunscreen less than SPF 15 can help prevent skin cancer, it also states that there is no evidence to support any increased efficacy in a product with SPF greater than 50. So, think twice if you want to buy some SPF100 or something like that.

Apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before going out and keep re-applying it every two hours.
Also; wear sunglasses and hats!

Hope you found this useful, if you want to know more about sunscreens I could write another post because this is like a big picture but there some other things important about them.

Always go to a dermatologist if you have some changes in your skin, they’re the experts.
Let me know your favorite sunscreen in the comments! Mine is the Tizo3, I highly recommend it.

¡Hola!
